A Christmas Prayer
by Wanda E Brunstetter
From the back cover:
A cross-country journey in 1850 leads to high mountain danger—and romance.
Only the brave—or foolhardy—would attempt a cross-country journey late in the season. Three wagons meet up in Independence, Missouri, in April 1850, and their owners decide to keep forging ahead despite many setbacks and delays. December finds them in the Sierra Nevada Mountains when a sudden snowstorm traps them, obscuring the trail.
Cynthia Cooper is traveling with her mother and the man she has promised to marry. But as Christmas is upon them and they are hunkered down in a small cabin, she is forced to reevaluate her reasons for planning to marry fellow-traveler Walter Prentice. When a widowed father heading to a California ranch and a gold prospector both show an interest in Cynthia, she weighs her dreams for marriage alongside her responsibility to care for her mother. Can love win over her timid heart?
Find out in A Christmas Prayer from NY Times bestselling author Wanda E. Brunstetter.

Wagon trains were prone to problems, and this adventure was no different. Sometimes those challenging times help us see the true nature of others and ourselves.
Cynthia is obligated to care for her mother and is therefore determined to fulfill that responsibility. The men in their group represent two perspectives — controlling or cooperative. As a short story, there is not much room to develop their individual characters.
A Christmas Prayer is comparable to a written Hallmark Christmas movie, set on a wagon train trip. It’s a sweet, feel-good story without much depth. Sometimes that’s just what we need during the busy holiday season.
If you’re looking for a story to analyze or one that will make you think, this probably isn’t the story for you right now. But if you want to slip away from your busyness and enjoy a sweet Christmas tale, this might be just what you’re looking for!
