What impact does the moon (lunar eclipses, full moons, etc.) have on our day-to-day lives? Something is sure happening in Leeann Betts’ new mystery, A Deadly Dissolution. I’m happy to have Leeann visiting again today to share about this newest story. Before we begin, let’s take a quick peek at the back cover.
The total lunar eclipse of October 2004 leaves more than Bear Cove, Maine, in the dark. The town’s newly-elected mayor, Walter Akerman, hires Carly to audit the town’s books but is then caught in a compromising situation with his secretary Evie Mack. A journalist in town to cover the eclipse turns up dead. Tom and Sarah’s adopted son Bradley comes to stay overnight to see the eclipse, then goes missing on a walk in town. When Mike’s car is in a serious wreck which the police say is an accident, Carly thinks somebody is trying to send her a message to stay away. How can she solve all these mysteries while not completely wearing herself to a frazzle?
Welcome back, Leeann! What inspired you to write this series or A Deadly Dissolution in particular?
I wrote the first book in 2002 for a NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) challenge. I wondered if I had at least one novel in me. Up to that point, I’d written short stories, children’s stories, devotionals, magazine articles, greeting cards, and poetry. But once I wrote the first one, I realized I loved Carly and wanted to write more about her adventures, so I went back and changed the ending to allude to her next book
NaNoWriMo is quite an accomplishment. Why did you choose this particular setting, and have you been there?
In this book, Carly is back home in Bear Cove, Maine, a small town on the east coast. I grew up on the east coast of Canada and know about small towns, and I’ve visited Maine a number of times, so I thought that would be a good fit. For her other adventures, I create fictional settings based on places I’ve actually visited.
Do you have personal experience with any of the events in A Deadly Dissolution, and if so, could you share about that?
Carly is a wee bit autobiographical, and some of her ideas about exercise closely mirror my own. And I was blessed to be in Wyoming last October for the total solar eclipse, and I’ve seen lunar eclipses on the east coast, so that part was easy.
What do you hope your readers take away from this novel?
I write stories to brighten the reader’s day, sharing insights into a God of second chances. I hope somebody, somewhere, sees the hope in these stories. Maybe someone is on the same seeking journey that Carly is regarding her faith. If so, keep asking questions. And maybe someone is where her daughter Denise is, secure in their faith. If so, don’t stop reaching out to others around you who need to hear about God’s love for them.
We’d love to know a little about you personally. Would you share a few fast favorites? What is your:
Favorite color? Sea foam green
Favorite season? Summer
Favorite writing snack? Potato chips and chocolate
Favorite beverage? Sparking water
Favorite animal? Cat
Favorite vacation destination? Somewhere warm
Favorite ice cream flavor? Anything with chocolate
Thanks for taking the time to visit with us today, Leeann!
Your turn! Did you try to watch the solar eclipse last fall? Were you close enough to see much of it?
