Military heroes are amazing, and I love hearing about the dogs they’ve trained to work alongside them. Terri Reed is visiting today to share her newest story, Mission to Protect, and I’m excited to hear more about it! Before we visit, let’s take a quick look at the story.
A riveting new series begins!
When the Red Rose Killer leaves his calling card for Staff Sergeant Felicity Monroe, she knows exactly what that means—she’s on his revenge list. Her boss, Master Sergeant Westley James, and K-9 German shepherd Dakota become her guardians, but they’ll have to act fast to escape the man who wants her dead.
Welcome back, Terri! What inspired you to write this series or this novel in particular?
Mission to Protect is part of the Military K-9 Unit continuity series from Love Inspired Suspense. The editors came up with the bones of the plot, the characters and the overarching suspense thread. It’s up to each author to develop their story using these bones. It’s an honor to be included in the series and I really enjoyed working with the other wonderful authors: Valerie Hansen, Dana Mentink, Maggie K. Black, Lenora Worth, Lynette Eason, Laura Scott, and Shirlee McCoy.
That’s quite a lineup! Do you have a favorite character from Mission to Protect? Why is this character your favorite?
My favorite character in this story was Dakota, the all black German shepherd. I enjoy writing about dogs and showing the bond between the canine and the handler and those the dog will protect. Learning about the Military Working Dog program was fascinating and challenging. I’ve written multiple books with K-9 officers but there’s a difference between civilian law enforcement K-9 Units and Military Working Dogs. I hope readers will enjoy the book.
It would be fascinating to watch them train the dogs and understand a bit more about how they work together. Do you have a favorite or “life” verse? Why is that one important to you?
My ‘life verse’ is Proverbs 3:5-6 King James Version (KJV) “5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” For me this verse encompasses the essence of faith. He is the one in control, not me. And by remembering to look to Him in all my endeavors, I am confident that He will guide me and guard me.
That’s the third time that passage has come up in various settings in 24 hours. I’m listening… 😉 If you could offer a word of encouragement to an aspiring author, what would you say?
I would tell aspiring authors to learn your craft and never stop. Even if you feel you’ve reached a plateau there is also something more to improve upon. I would also say you have to believe in yourself before anyone else will believe in you. Take your writing seriously and guard against the voices, whether inside your head or coming from others, that try to convince you you’re not good enough. Pray and ask for God’s leading. And never forget that perseverance wins the day.
Great advice and encouragement! Aside from reading and writing, what hobbies do you enjoy?
I love to dance and exercise. I’m not sure they qualify as hobbies. I stream workout videos online so that I can exercise from the comfort of my own home. Plus its more time efficient not to have to drive to a gym and back. Though there are times when I miss the camaraderie of working out in a group setting. As for dancing, there’s a dance place in our town that occasionally does 80’s night and my hubby will actually go with me since that is our generation of music.
Oh, that does sound fun! Thanks so much for taking the time to visit with us today, Terri!
