We first met author Gail Pallotta last year when she shared her novel, Breaking Barriers. I’m happy to have her back today with her newest novel, Barely Above Water. Before we begin our visit, though, let’s take a look at the story.
Suzie relies on her Christian faith as she faces the uncertainty of the disease, and turns to a renowned alternative doctor in Destin, Florida. She takes a job coaching a county-sponsored summer swim team. She’s determined to turn the fun, sometimes comical, rag-tag bunch into winners.
Her handsome boss renews her belief in love, but learns of her mysterious affliction and abruptly cuts romantic ties. Later he has regrets, but can he overcome his fear of losing a loved one and regain Suzie’s trust?

What inspired you to write Barely Above Water?
Ten years ago I grew quite ill, but the physician turned me away because he couldn’t diagnose the malady. Divine intervention led me to an alternative doctor who helped me immediately and labeled the sickness as Chronic Lyme Disease. Since then I’ve met and heard of many people suffering from similar situations. Their stories touched my heart and inspired me to write Barely Above Water, which includes symptoms and therapies for the disease. I wove the technical material around an up-and-down romance and a cute group of youngsters on a fun summer league swim team. Also, two experts share little-known facts about Lyme and Chronic Lyme Disease in the back of the book.
I don’t know much about Lyme or Chronic Lyme Disease, but I hope the treatments have made it more manageable for you! Why did you choose this particular setting? Have you been there?
I’ve been to Destin, Florida, many times. I thought the white sand with crystal, clear emerald water lapping its shores would enhance the romance. A peninsula, it’s situated between The Gulf of Mexico and the bay. The two meet at the harbor.
That sounds like a setting just waiting for a story like yours. What do you hope your readers take away from this novel?
I hope readers come away convinced there is nothing bigger than God. I’d also like for them to have a better understanding of Lyme disease, and of course I want them to have fun reading about the romance and kids’ swim team.
Both educational and fun! Aside from reading and writing, what hobbies do you enjoy?
I’m always more refreshed when I have my swim, and I love to go bargain shopping with my daughter. But, as far as hobbies, such as cross-stitching, etc., mine would be arranging flowers.
It sounds like you have experience with swim teams, too. Thanks for taking the time to share with us today, Gail!
Your turn! What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
