A brilliant transplant surgeon. A rogue organ broker. A ghost child.
And the legend that could destroy them all.
A brutal murder convinces surgeon Mia Kendall there’s more than she imagined to the mysterious spike in heart transplant rejections. Determined to find answers before she loses another patient, Mia gets sucked into a dangerous international medical web. With time running out for her youngest transplant recipient, Mia is forced to partner with a disillusioned ex-military pilot who flies brokered organs across East Africa. But searching for the truth will prove costly for the unlikely duo racing to stop a madman before he annihilates a rare and cursed bloodline.
From best-selling author Lisa Harris and award-winning author Lynne Gentry comes a chilling, hypnotic medical thriller that will take you from the suburbs of Cincinnati to the jungles of Africa.
Welcome, Lynne and Lisa! What inspired you to write Ghost Heart?
LYNNE: Just over a decade ago, a newspaper article featured a picture of a terrified albino. The fear in his pale eyes caught my attention. As I read about the horrors these fragile people faced in Africa, I couldn’t believe such evil existed in the world. I called Lisa, who lives in Mozambique, and asked her to investigate.
LISA: Until Lynne wrote to me about the article, I’d never heard of these barbaric crimes. But after doing some further research, I discovered that the atrocities against albinos had been going on for years. Once we learned that the witch doctors targeted the pale skin and hair of this minority to make good luck charms and potions, we knew we had to tell their story.
So this isn’t just your imagination at work. I could see how an albino person would really stand out among dark-skinned Africans, but wow. I hadn’t ever thought about the superstition that might invite. Why did you choose this particular setting, and have you been there?
The situation chose the setting. Tanzania and Malawi are two African countries struggling to combat this problem. Also, setting the story in Africa made sense with the increase in Americans going abroad for organ transplants and other medical procedures. Lynne has never been to Africa but dreams of going there. Lisa lives in Mozambique, which borders Tanzania.
With such an intense subject, what do you hope your readers take away from this novel?
LYNNE: Beneath the color of our skin we are all alike. Because my novels always speak to the intrinsic worth of each of us, I long for the day we can all learn to look past outward appearances.
LISA: In most of my suspense novels, I turn to real life events that affect our world today. In highlighting things—like the issues facing albinos today, I hope that people will step up and get involved in their own communities and make a difference.
That is such a battle in every culture! We are so quick to judge and so slow to take a stand… The two of you have accomplished an amazing task to write a book together while living on separate continents! What do you feel are the greatest blessings and challenges of working so closely with another author?
LYNNE: There is a creative give and take that makes the storytelling process more difficult, but in the end we believe also makes the story more powerful.
LISA: This was the first time I’d ever done anything like this, but while it was challenging, it was also a huge blessing to me. It allowed us to each take our strengths and put them together, while also learning from each other.
I’m looking forward to reading it. 🙂 We’d love to get to know you each a little better. Aside from reading and writing, what hobbies do you enjoy?
LYNNE: I have trained a medical therapy dog. I love taking him to work the cancer wards at the hospital. I also am working to improve my gardening skills. I always count it a victory when a plant not only survives but thrives.
LISA: I love photography, especially of wildlife which is so plentiful in Africa. I also love experimenting with foods and recipes from other countries.
You’ve both done a lot with your lives. Which accomplishment means the most to you?
LYNNE: You might think it is the mounting stack of books I’ve written on my shelf, but it is watching my children thrive and raise their families that thrills me the most.
LISA: I totally agree with Lynne. Books and awards pass away and in the end mean nothing compared to the impact we pray our lives–and even our books–make on others.
I love that! “Only what’s done for Christ will last.” Thank you both for taking the time to visit with us today!
Your turn! Do you share any hobbies with Lynne or Lisa? Which one(s)?
