What if a solar flare hit Earth? How would you personally be impacted? We met Linore Burkard last fall when she shared RESILIENCE, the second of her PULSE EFFEX SERIES, with us. I’m happy to have her back today to share about her newest release, DEFIANCE, which is the third in the series. Before we visit with Linore, let’s take a look at the story.
In this third installment of the PULSE EFFEX SERIES, foreign soldiers and fellow Americans gone rogue are just the beginning of what Andrea, Lexie and Sarah must face. Beneath the threat of nuclear strikes and guerrilla armies, the girls long for a free country in which to live–and love. Survival means resistance must give way to defiance. But can ordinary teens and their families withstand powerful forces and keep hope alive?
Welcome back, Linore! What inspired you to write this series, or this novel in particular?
When my sweet historical romance series was published, I never dreamed my next would be YA/dystopian. What a switch in genres! So, how did I go from one end of the writing spectrum to another? Blame it on an idea that refused to die. I read a headline about how close the earth came to suffering a catastrophic electromagnetic pulse, or EMP, in 2012. We missed the worst effects of a solar flare by a hair (in space terms); but the “what if” factor had been set in motion. What if that flare hadn’t missed us? What if I was a teen raised on electronics–or an adult medically dependent on them–and it all went dead in a matter of seconds? What if the next flare doesn’t miss? PULSE, the first book in my PULSE EFFEX Series, was born. This month, the third installment, DEFIANCE, releases!
That’s definitely an intriguing question. Do you have personal experience with any events in the story, and if so, could you share about that?
Fortunately, I haven’t experienced the results of a catastrophic solar flare, but I have lived through a black out. Way back when I was growing up in Queens, NY–in the shadow of Manhattan—we had a black out. When you grow up in an environment that, compared to most of the world, is densely populated, the eerie darkness of a black-out is in stark contrast to the usual reassuring glow of city lights. Being a young teen at the time, I walked the streets with my friends. It was like being on an ocean at night with no compass. That’s how weird it felt. (I really would not want to be in an urban environment if a future PULSE ever happens!)
It’s surreal to walk through a situation like that, where everything is not as it “should” be. What do you hope readers take away from this novel?
When I wrote the first book in the series, PULSE, I was obsessed with the idea that an EMP (an electromagnetic pulse) could happen—but no one was ready. Even now, two years later, most people are blissfully unaware that our electric grid is vulnerable (not only to solar weather, but to terrorists). Fortunately, the government is finally beginning to harden the grid against these dangers, but they are YEARS away from seeing that done. So I wanted people to come away from the book feeling that they’d been warned, but also empowered. I wanted to show that it is possible to prepare for something like this—or any major upheaval to life as we know it—with God’s help, and good stewardship.
With this third installment of the series, I expect readers to close the book feeling satisfied and hopeful. They’ve been on a three-book journey with the characters; they’ve seen hard things, and shed some tears. But along with hardship, God gives surprising blessings to us—and my characters discover that, too. So there is romance and unexpected joy in this book; and I think readers will feel good as they turn that last page.
I love stories that leave us feeling more confident as we face whatever it is life is throwing at us with God on our side. Aside from reading and writing, what hobbies do you enjoy?
I love to cook and bake, (mostly Paleo), paint outdoors, watch “period” dramas, swim, shoot, (I’m a licensed carrier of a firearm), garden, hike with my husband, and shop! In fact, there are so many things I love doing that it takes discipline for me to keep myself seated before my laptop or PC to write. I’m allergic to boredom and usually multi-tasking in some way. (Even in church, it helps me to take notes during the sermon or I get fidgety.) My guilty pleasure is driving fast.
It does sound like it would be hard to sit still when there are so many other fun things you could be doing. 😉 Can you give any hints about what you’re working on now?
I have unfinished romance novels in my files, which have been simmering on the proverbial back burner, but they’re reaching a slow boil in my brain—if you know what I mean. While I wrote the PULSE EFFEX series, I was able to keep them from my conscious mind, but the thing is, I know they’re waiting, and they need to be finished. If there’s anything I hate, it’s unfinished projects, even though I am a master at creating them! (I have more ideas for books than I could write in two lifetimes.) Anyway, all this to say, as soon as my next book is released and the initial marketing is over, I will turn my attention back to inspirational romance. My publishing career began with it, and it’s time for me to get back to it. And, I have long-suffering readers who have been waiting!
I’m sure they will be happy to hear that, too! Thanks for taking the time to visit with us today, Linore!
