Last week I shared my thoughts about Brenda Anderson’s newest novel, Capturing Beauty. Today we have the privilege of “meeting” the hero from the story, Haven Carlysle. You’re in for a treat! 😉 Plus, Brenda is offering to give away a paperback copy! We can talk about that later, though. I’m sure you’re anxious to know more about Haven…
North Shore Explorer Magazine
“Meet Nature Photographer, Haven Carlysle”
by Linda Cramer
Linda:Welcome, Haven, to the “North Shore Explorer” magazine.
Haven:I’m glad to be here, Linda.
Linda:I’ve seen some of your photographs and they’re amazing! Our magazine is fortunate to have you on staff. How long have you pursued a career in photography?
Haven:I’ve been a shutterbug all my life, starting when my dad gave me his old little 35mm back when I was about seven or eight. I always loved the magic of recreating on paper what I saw with my own eyes. As for pursuing photography as a career, it just sort of happened to me a few years back. An editor for a Minneapolis magazine saw pictures hanging on my office wall that I’d taken of Minnehaha Falls. She asked me about them, then hired me for a specific shoot. That’s when the bug really hit me.
Linda:We at “North Shore Explorer” are glad it did! So, is this job the reason you moved to Duluth?
Haven:(Looks to the side, focusing on nothing, his jaw shifting from side to side) Not completely. (Looks back at Linda and squares his shoulders) I grew up here. Spent the first twenty-two years of my life in this area and made a whole lot of mistakes. A tragedy sent me running to Minneapolis, and now I’ve returned to make amends and hopefully reconcile with those I’ve hurt.
Linda:Interesting… Would you care to elaborate on what that mistake was?
Haven:(sighs) You don’t need all the details, but I’m hoping to reconcile with my son.
Haven:(Smiles and his blue eyes light up) He’s an amazing kid. Eight years old, and he does everything fast. Runs, climbs, all with a prosthetic foot. He doesn’t let that slow him at all.
Linda:A prosthetic foot? Sounds like there’s a story behind it.
Haven:There is, but it’s not mine to tell. The important thing is I love him, and I won’t let anything or anyone stand in the way of me recapturing his love. And I’ve been greatly blessed with the help of a new friend who’s helping bridge the gap between us.
Linda:A friend? Hmm. Your body language tells me this person might be more than a friend.
Haven:(His eyes grow wide) I … uh (Runs a hand over his beard, wiping away a smile) Uh, no. She’s an amazing woman, but there isn’t—there can’t be—any romantic interest. My focus has to be on my son and him alone.
Linda:Something tells me “thou dost protest too much.”
Haven: (vigorously shakes his head)
Linda (chuckles and offers her hand): Thank you for chatting with me today, and I look forward to watching your career—and potential romance—bloom.
