Welcome to the Pinned in Time Blog Hop: a twelve day party celebrating Pepper Basham’s Penned in Time series! There is a Pinterest scavenger hunt, exciting giveaway, behind the scenes looks into the worlds of The Thorn Bearer and The Thorn Keeper–as well as a glimpse into the heart of their talented author.
Plus, Pepper is also offering a second giveaway just for you! There are so many goodies in this post! 😉 Let’s start with the “Penned in Time” series and the Pinned in Time Blog Hop and Giveaway. Here are the summaries of the first two books in the series.
When Ashleigh Dougall’s fiancé leaves her eight months before their wedding, the unexpected blow ignites a battalion of insecurities stemming from her father’s intimate betrayal. In an attempt to escape her shame, Ashleigh boards the ill-fated Lusitania to cross the war-torn waters of Europe. Much to her dismay, she isn’t traveling alone.
Sam Miller is always making up for his best friend’s mistakes. Determined to help his childhood friend, Ashleigh, he offers his compassion and companionship as she ventures across a perilous sea. With the faint hope of renewing his lost love for Ashleigh’s sister, Sam never expects to find the woman of his dreams in the love of his childhood friend.
Neither are prepared for the life-altering and heart-breaking journey of their friendship.
With her past in shambles, how can she fashion a future of hope?
Catherine Dougall’s past of manipulation has left her future in threads. With a new faith, she longs to take the remnants of her life and make something beautiful, but shame, societies’ judgments, and the natural consequences of an unplanned pregnancy test her newfound hope. Dr. David Ross doesn’t help either. His kindness, sacrifice, and tenderness tempt her to impossible dreams. A fallen woman doesn’t merit a fairytale.
David Ross has made every effort to keep his life above reproach. His passion for the sick pump fresh purpose through his choices, but without financial support to maintain his war hospital, all is lost. When his notorious aunt offers an easy solution, David is tempted to give in to her demands, but his growing affection for the reformed flirt, Catherine Dougall, unwinds the careful wall around his heart and offers an unexpected choice.
When the worst of war tears them apart, can love renew the memory of what was lost or will tragedy steal away their hope forever.
From the beautiful Derbyshire countryside to the trenches of World War One, Catherine and David must learn to trust in a God who designs a masterpiece out of brokenness and fashions hope in the most unlikely places.

An Opportunity to Meet Pepper:
We also have the privilege of hearing a bit about Pepper’s newest novel, A Twist of Faith, and she’s giving away an e-copy of it, too! Here’s a little about this book.
Dr. Adelina Roseland has worked ten years in research as an accent reduction specialist to attain her dream job. But a secret wager to transform Appalachian cattle farmer Reese Mitchell into corporate material challenges Adelina in ways she never expected, threatening her new position.
For one, Adelina didn’t plan for the faith and friction of Reese, or the unexpected influence of his chaotic family. Now, drawn into a culture she’d tried to forget, Adelina finds the warmth of family, the hope of faith, and the joy of love melting away the deep wounds of her past.
But when Reese discovers that he’s a pawn in her climb up the academic ladder, will he forgive Adelina s deceit or will their miscommunication end in two broken lives?
Welcome back, Pepper! What inspired you to write this series, or this novel in particular?
This novel began as a fun experiment. Since I’m a speech-language pathologist by day (and a lover of My Fair Lady/Pygmalion), I wondered how I could take my knowledge of my profession and place it in one of my favorite places – The Blue Ridge Mountains. Home. Somehow, the story began to spread into an entire family saga built around loosely retelling classic stories. Bringing in my Appalachian culture and the love for family inherent within that culture, I hoped to celebrate the preciousness of family.
What a fun variation of a classic story! Do you have a favorite character from this story? Why is this character your favorite?
I think my FAVORITE character in this book is Reese Mitchell. He’s a swoony hero, but more than that he’s gentle, has depth, is flawed, and has such a kind heart. The strong-sweet type. I love how he heals in the book, but I also just LOVE what a good daddy he is! He’s also one of those subtle flirts – which is super cute!
He does sound like a my kind of hero! Do you have personal experience with any of the events in your story, and if so, could you share about that?
My aunt Tonda had the original Haus! The grinning dog. She would babysit me and my brother sometimes and we got to spend lots of time with Haus – a sweet, smart dog, who actually smiled at you when he’d see you. It was hilarious and scary all at the same time. Once you got used to it, you looked for it – but that’s a true story in the book.
Also, the embankment that comes to play in the story is based on a real place back home in Virginia where I grew up. I would ride/drive passed it and always be a little nervous, especially at night.
Family get-togethers in this book are taken right from personal experience in a large, loud, Appalachian family. There are a few very particular personal experiences coming up in books 2 and 3 –so that will be a funny thing to talk about later. ☺
Oh fun! I can’t wait! What do you hope your readers take away from this novel?
Hope is one of my main themes in all of my books, but this particular series focuses on finding home. And home doesn’t mean a physical place, though that comes to play in the books too, but it’s more about an emotional/spiritual place of belonging. A place of rescue and healing…of belonging. The only place to find the truest home is in God’s sweet provision for our hearts.
A place where we can truly rest. Isn’t that something we so often long for…? Did you have a favorite story/book as a child? Why was it a favorite?
I fell in LOVE with The Secret Garden by Frances Hodson Burnett when I was about eleven. Up until then I’d been a diehard Nancy Drew fan (and still was), but something about the magical world of Mary’s as this ‘secret’ garden bloomed like her personality and heart. I think it was my first ‘love’ moment of England and manor houses and dark mysteries because at 14 I became a HUGE Jane Eyre fan (and still am) ☺
Yes! I loved when my kids reached the age when they, too, fell in love with The Secret Garden! If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you most like to go?
I think this answer will always be the UK. I love that part of the world. I love the ‘oldness’ of it, the weather (yes, I like rain), the culture and accents, the history, the natural beauties of massive Scottish highlands to crystal Irish coasts. So…yes, probably always the UK ☺
So much to see and hear and do! Thanks for taking the time to visit with us, Pepper!
Your turn! Pepper described Reese as a “subtle flirt.” Which catches your attention more — a subtle flirt or a charmer?
