Homeschooling is growing in popularity. As a homeschooling mom myself, I enjoy visiting with those who have successfully navigated these waters and hearing their experiences. Amber Schamel has not only successfully completed her education, but she has also become a multi-published author. I am excited to have her visiting today to share her latest novel with us. Before we meet Amber, here’s a look at The Master’s Calling.
Malon believes his life calling is to become a disciple of the Messiah and help free Israel from bondage. When at last his family consents to let him go, Malon arrives in Jerusalem only to discover that he is too late. The man he thought to be the Messiah has been crucified, and Barabbas—his greatest enemy—has been set free.
Appalled by the cowardice of Jesus’ disciples, Malon returns home seething with frustration and despair. Everything he believed he was destined to become died with Jesus. Was he wrong about his destiny?
Welcome back, Amber! What inspired you to write The Master’s Calling?
It was really a “God Moment” for me. This is the third book in a series, but it all originated from one short story about a woman who was healed of leprosy. When I was thinking about expanding that story, God dropped the idea into my heart for the entire series.
What if you wanted to become a disciple of Jesus, but you got to Jerusalem too late? This story stands alone from the rest of the series, but is about the son of the characters in books one and two.
That’s an interesting question to consider! What do you hope your readers take away from the story?
First, that God’s plan triumphs over all, even when you can’t see it at the moment. Second, that Christ’s Spirit has the power to change your life.
Two very important truths. If you could travel back in time to this general time period, which one person (besides Jesus) would you most like to meet?
If I could travel back to the New Testament era, it would be a hard choice between Peter, Mary and Stephen. There are so many characters that would be fascinating to talk to! I hope that someday in Heaven I will have that chance.
I agree! I think it would be fascinating to learn more about their lives and experiences! Can you give any hints about what you’re working on now?
It could be described as It’s a Wonderful Life meets Red Badge of Courage. A Christmas story set during the Civil War and aftermath. 😀 Won’t give away too much at this point.
Just enough to make us even more curious! LOL What is your favorite part of the writing/editing/publishing process?
Planning the story and writing the first draft is probably my favorite part, although there are a lot of pieces to it I like. Even editing is a love/hate thing for me.
So I have to ask… How did homeschooling impact your journey to publication and where you are now?
Homeschooling allowed me to study my passions and equipped me with the knowledge and confidence to pursue writing. I also had the opportunity to travel a lot, which brought history to life for me and exposed me to a lot of characters. 🙂
That opportunity to really dig into the things you are most passionate about is one of the things we appreciate, too. Would you share something that the Lord has been teaching you recently?
Every miracle begins as a problem. Sometimes God puts things in our lives that look impossible so that He can work a miracle and prove how much He loves us. But when we call the situation “impossible” our doubt limits what God can do, because it takes faith to overcome. He’s been telling me, “Stop calling impossible the miracles I am working for you!”
He can do so much more than we could think or imagine… But that’s not always easy to remember! Thanks so much for taking the time to share with us today, Amber!

Aaliyah’s last chance at winning her husband’s love is destroyed when she is banished from her home as an ‘unclean’ sinner. Her husband has branded her as an adulteress and threatens to kill her if she comes near the town. Struggling to survive amidst the fear, grief and bitterness of living in a leper colony, she would give anything just to see her son again.
Is God really punishing her with this disease? When rumors of a Healer from Nazareth reach the colony, Aaliyah wonders if this man could really heal her, or if He would despise her like the rest of her people. It is now that Aaliyah must make the most difficult decision of her life: risk her life to appear in public, or die a leper.
Dreams…they shouldn’t bother him, but when Tyrus’ worst nightmare is vindicated, he has no choice but to face reality.
