Today we get to be that proverbial “fly on the wall” in Patricia Bradley’s office as one of her main characters stops by. Shh… Let’s listen! 😉
The brusque tone drew me away from the computer screen. I knew trouble when I heard it and shook my head slightly, trying to clear it before dealing with what ever issue Livy Reynolds. She’s the heroine of Gone Without a Trace. I pasted a polite smile on my lips and turned to face her. “Yes?”
Livy marched into my office. “Did you do it on purpose, or was it Alex’s idea?”
“Do what?” I smiled innocently, pretending to not know what she was talking about. I’d actually expected a little resistance when I put an ISTJ (Introverted, sensing, thinking judging from Myers-Briggs) with an ESTP (Extroverted, sensing, thinking, perceiving). Or put another way—Livy is a by-the-rules cop and Alex, my hero, is a rules-are-only-suggestions private investigator.
“Making me deal with that irresponsible man.” She folded her arms across her chest. “He’s driving me crazy.”
“Really?” Alex had said the very same thing about her not two days ago. “How so?
“He laughs at my lists, and wrecks them—like today. I have people to interview and these records I need to examine, and he wants to take me for a plane ride.”
She bit her bottom lip. “…Maybe.”
“I thought you didn’t like to fly, you know, because your dad took off to Alaska to be a bush pilot.”
“Well…I’m beginning to see Alex isn’t exactly like my dad. Alex might be a tad more responsible. Did you know he flew this baby who needed a heart operation to a specialist in Texas? And wouldn’t take a penny for it.”
I hid a smile. “He’s seems like a good guy.
“He is—I mean, he’s okay.”
“Kinda nice looking, too.”
“Oh, wow. You got that right. He looks like that soccer player from Brazil.”
“You mean Ricardo Kaká?”
“Yeah. I wonder if Alex can play soccer?”
“Why don’t you ask him when you meet him at the airfield?”
“I might just do that.” She tilted her head toward me. “Don’t get any ideas, though. Okay?”
“Wouldn’t think of it. Now get out of here, so I can get back to work.”
The past is repeating itself—and time is running out
It’s been more than two years since homicide detective Livy Reynolds’s cousin disappeared from Logan Point. Unlike most people in her hometown, Livy has never believed that Robyn left voluntarily. When Dallas private investigator Alex Jennings contacts her concerning a senator’s missing granddaughter who was last seen in Logan Point, Livy notices eerie similarities between the two disappearances. With self-doubt plaguing her after killing a teenager in the line of duty and an almost instant dislike of the self-assured PI, she’s finding this investigation an uphill battle. But with the prospect of finding her cousin on the horizon, she’ll have to find a way to work with Alex—before it’s too late.
